HANDS-ON EXERCISE
The following hands-on exercises are designed to assist you in practising the various lessons in this section. Where constituted, you’re encouraged to carryout this exercises in groups for collaboration and effective results.
Exercise 1: Creative Photography Ideas

- Objective: Practice various creative photography techniques.
- Instructions:
- Macro Photography: Capture close-up shots of small subjects such as flowers or insects. Experiment with a shallow depth of field.
- Long Exposure Photography: Take a long exposure shot of a moving subject like a waterfall or traffic. Use a tripod and try different exposure times.
- Portrait Photography: Take portraits using different lighting setups and backgrounds. Try to capture natural and candid expressions.
- Landscape Photography: Photograph a landscape at different times of the day, focusing on composition and depth.
- Street Photography: Capture candid moments and interesting scenes in urban environments. Experiment with different focal lengths and perspectives.
- Abstract Photography: Focus on shapes, colors, and patterns in everyday objects or architectural elements. Experiment with close-up shots and unconventional angles.
Exercise 2: Editing with Mobile Apps

- Objective: Familiarize yourself with different mobile photo editing tools.
- Instructions:
- Take a photo using your smartphone.
- Edit the photo using each of the following apps:
- Snapseed: Apply selective adjustments and HDR effects.
- Adobe Lightroom Mobile: Use presets and perform color grading.
- VSCO: Experiment with filters and adjust exposure and contrast.
- Instagram: Use built-in filters and make basic adjustments to brightness, contrast, and saturation.
- Compare the results from each app and note the differences in features and effects.
- Post your result on the SAED Facebook Page (Featuring both the edited & original copy).
Exercise 3: Photo Editing Workflow

- Objective: Develop a structured approach to photo editing.
- Instructions:
- Choose a photo that needs editing.
- Start by adjusting exposure and contrast to enhance the image.
- Perform color correction by adjusting temperature, tint, saturation, and vibrance.
- Crop and straighten the image to improve composition.
- Apply sharpening and noise reduction as needed.
- Experiment with creative filters and effects to add a unique touch to the photo.
- Review the edited photo and compare it with the original. Note the improvements and any areas for further refinement.
