Notching and Clipping
Notching and clipping are techniques used to reduce bulk and ensure smooth curves and corners in a garment.
Notching
- What is notching? Notching involves making small cuts into the seam allowance at curves and points.
- Why notch? Notching helps to reduce bulk and prevent the fabric from pulling or puckering when the seam is sewn.
- When to notch: Notch at sharp curves and points, such as the dart points, collar points, and curved hems.
Clipping
- What is clipping? Clipping involves making small cuts into the seam allowance at curved edges.
- Why clip? Clipping helps to reduce bulk and prevent the fabric from stretching or pulling when the seam is sewn.
- When to clip: Clip at gentle curves, such as the neckline, armholes, and curved hems.
Important Considerations:
- Depth of Notches and Clips: The depth of the notches and clips should be about 1/4 inch.
- Direction of Notches and Clips: Make sure to notch or clip towards the seam line.
- Avoid Cutting Through the Stitching Line: Be careful not to cut through the stitching line when notching or clipping.
By following these techniques, you can create smooth, professional-looking seams in your sewing projects.
